Puerto La Duquesa
Just of the main N340 coast road, some 30 kilometres
west of Marbella lies the beautiful Puerto La Duquesa. Although
within easy reach of either Malaga airport (40 minutes) and
Gibraltar airport (30 minutes), this little oasis is very
different from the busier Costa del Sol resorts.
The port offers full marina services for boating
enthusiasts, whether they are participants or interested spectators.
There is a good selection of bars and restaurants,
with prices and menus to suit all tastes. Most types of cuisine
are represented, but undoubtedly the fish restaurants are
a 'not to be missed'. Many have their own boats and will feature
the catch-of-the-day on their menus!
A limited selection of shops offer all the essential
requirements, and some luxury items whilst for the real shopping
enthusiast, Gibraltar and Marbella are within easy reach.
The marina waterfront area is closed to traffic providing
a safe area for children and preserving the serenity.
Across the road, the Duquesa Golf Club is an
18 hole Robert Trent Jones designed course that offers an
enjoyable challenge. The fairways undulate inland towards
the mountains and offer spectacular, if sometimes distracting,
views of the coast. The Club also offers tennis, squash and
a gym.
The port is flanked by two very long, sandy
beaches with their own chringuitios, or beach bars. To the
east, one beach stretches as Sabinillas and on to Estapona,
to the west the other winds around the coast to Sotogrande.
A small fishing fleet still operates from the
port adding to the authenticity and atmosphere. The main N340
highway passes Duquesa, which is accessed by an underpass.
Whilst at the moment this can be a busy artery from Gibraltar
to Malaga, a new inland toll road will shortly be constructed,
shortening the airport journey and increasing the price of
property.
